Ask what follows before making a big decision

In short Before a big decision, ask "And do what?" and "And then what?", because the first result is easy to calculate and the consequences that follow decide the outcome.

Before making a big decision, ask two questions.

The first comes from Amy Trask, former CEO of the Raiders. Known as the “Princess of Darkness,” she wasn’t afraid to challenge Al Davis.

Her question was simple: “And do what?”

Fire someone? Who replaces them, and are they actually better?

The second question: “And then what?”

I see this constantly with clients.

The numbers look good. The projections make sense. But the analysis stops where it should begin.

Raise prices? And then what happens to customer retention?

Cut customer service costs? And then what happens to repeat business?

Replace employees with AI? And then what happens when customers need something the AI can’t deliver?

The first result is usually easy to calculate.

What follows can make or break the decision.

Good data can support a bad decision. Ask better questions to make better decisions.

Rock on.
