Marketing should be measured as a system, not by channel

In short Marketing investments should be measured together as one connected system, because channels amplify or compete with each other in ways that channel-level dashboards cannot show.

What if the biggest opportunity created by Walmart's acquisition of Vibe isn't better streaming ads... but better business decisions?

That's what immediately came to mind when I read about Walmart acquiring Vibe, often described as the "Google Ads of streaming".

Most marketers will see another media platform.

At Provalytics, we see another signal that media, commerce, and analytics are becoming one connected system.

For years the industry has measured channels independently. Television, streaming, retail media, search, social, etc. Each has its own dashboard, KPIs, and optimization process.

But customers don't experience marketing that way.

Every investment influences multiple simultaneous customer decisions along a journey of conversions and every customer decision contributes to multiple different business outcomes ... the key word is MULTIPLE (a.k.a. a system).

That's why we developed Agile Insights Modeling (AIM) at Provalytics.

Rather than asking whether streaming generated a click or a sale, AIM estimates how all your multiple marketing investments work together to simultaneously influence the journey components of awareness, consideration, purchase, repeat purchase, revenue, and profit. It reveals where investments reinforce one another, where they compete for the same demand, and where they create incrementality.

A retail client that was allocating media based largely on demographic segments and channel-level performance now understands the importance of "system thinking" in marketing measurement. Once we modeled the entire system, the conversation changed.

Some channels that looked average individually became high-value because they amplified the effectiveness of other investments. Others produced impressive engagement metrics but contributed little incremental business value.

The biggest gains didn't come from buying more media.

They came from understanding how the entire marketing system worked together.

The Walmart-Vibe announcement isn't just another ad tech story.

It's another step toward a future where competitive advantage belongs to organizations that measure interactions instead of impressions.

Because the future of marketing isn't about optimizing channels. It's about optimizing the system.

Cheers
