Use data to support the story, not replace it

In short Marketing works better when data supports a narrative instead of acting as the sole guide, because authentic stories connect more deeply with audiences.

Marketers still relying solely on data miss the story arc that wins audiences, just like Emmy judges reward narrative over numbers.

When I saw the Emmy winners this week, I thought about how often marketers overlook the power of storytelling in favor of numbers. In one campaign for a B2B tech company, the team initially relied heavily on data-driven insights. But the content was flat despite the precision. We shifted to a narrative approach, weaving customer stories into the strategy.

The assumption is that data alone drives results. What we found was that integrating authentic stories connected more deeply with the audience. The team stopped viewing data as the sole guide and started using it as a tool to enhance narratives.

When data becomes the supporting cast rather than the main act, the audience engagement often reaches unexpected heights.
